SME Tech Group: The Human Side of Lean

The SME Tech Group: The Human Side of Lean was initiated sometime around 2003 in form of regular conference calls. The reason for setting up this group was a common interest of some very nice individuals to find some answer to the extremely interesting question: => What makes Toyota so special? To find the reason why Toyota is doing so well and almost all Western car manufacturers are doing exactly the opposite? How can Toyota open one plant after the other in North America – filled with Western people! - and GM and Ford are closing down plants even faster? Why is Toyota gaining 2-digit market shares and others lose market shares in breathtaking speed? Well, it did not take very long for the group to figure out that Toyota is probably the world champion in determining, implementing, communicating, and sustaining Best Practice Business Processes, mainly based on Lean Manufacturing. So you might think that’s it…? You better think again! This Lean reason would be far too easy. Here are some reasons why: GM has probably the most advance and educated Lean, Six Sigma, TOC – you name it – experts within their organization. In addition GM is running the NUMMI plant in Fremont, CA, a 50/50 joint venture with Toyota since 1984. So let’s come back to the burning Question: Why do Western companies hardly succeed in getting the same results? Do YOU have an answer? Now SME launched this amazing platform: The Lean Registry and we added our Human Side of Lean group to it, to further open up the discussion to everybody interested and to gain further insights in order to getting closer to the answer to THE question. Thanks for you interest in The Human Side of Lean Juergen Boenisch PS: We also welcome you to be part of our monthly SME Tech Group call. Please join in on the second Wednesday of every month (except holidays) at 7 p.m. EST by calling toll free 1-800-531-3045 and entering attendee code 7755 578# (New Numbers as of May 2010).
